Welcome to GSRC

The Georgia Society for Respiratory Care is an affiliate of the American Association for Respiratory Care. The AARC is the only professional society for respiratory therapists in hospitals and with home care companies, managers of respiratory and cardiopulmonary services, and educators who provide respiratory care training.

This site is dedicated to the professional development of respiratory therapists in Georgia, and the patients they care for. Feel free to browse the site and email our team if you have questions or ideas.

State RCP Licensure Changes - Effective January 1, 2012

HB 87, The Illegal Immigration Reform and Enforcement Act of 2011, wil go into effect January 1, 2012. This law altered the requirements for verifying the lawful presence of all applicants for public benefits, which specifically includes professional licenses. All licensure renewals after December 31, 2011 should have a notarized affidavit of citizenship status and at least one document from the approved list of secure and verifiable documents. These documents include a US passport, a US military identification card, or a valid driver's license. The full list is available on pages 3-4 here.

With this new documentation, it is expected there will be delays. If your renewal date is December 31, 2011 to March 31, 2012, the renewal time period is now open. If you renew before December 31, you will not need to verify your lawful presence until your next renewal date. Make sure to renew early.

President's Message

First of all, I am humbled by the opportunity to serve as the 45th president of the Georgia Society for Respiratory Care. This year we will celebrate our 45th anniversary as a Chartered Affiliate of the American Association for Respiratory Care. Our Society, established in 1967, is actually older than many of the therapists currently practicing in the state of Georgia today. The strength of our society, the positions and jobs we currently are allowed to perform are based on work done by volunteer leadership teams for forty five years.

Each of us, as respiratory therapists, wants to feel optimistic that opportunities for work will always be there and that we will continue to find gainful employment in our profession for the remainder of our careers. However, realistically, none of us can be certain that our jobs or profession will still be here when another 45 years rolls around. The one thing I am certain of today is that what our society becomes and the positions or employment opportunities we have in the future will to some degree be based on the work that we are willing to do today. It is going to take all of us, not just the board of directors, the leadership team, or the executive office, working together to make sure that we are still a viable profession in the future.

Several years ago, an individual walked up to someone on the leadership team and asked the question if everyone on the board of directors also had to be a “member of the AARP.” I choose to believe this individual intended to ask if everyone had to be a “member of the AARC.” Over the years we have chuckled about this many times, but the poignant truth is that many Respiratory Therapists in this state and nation are now at the point in our lives where we are members of both the AARP and the AARC. It is obvious we need younger therapists to become more involved with the state and national society’s leadership roles. It is our job to provide them with opportunities to become involved.

This year one of our main goals is to increase the number of members in the GSRC and to recruit individuals who are willing to invest some of their time into the viability of this profession. If you’re interested and would be willing to serve as a volunteer in this organization, I encourage you to visit our website, talk to individuals who are currently serving in leadership positions and join us as we work to shape the next 45 years.
